Is a destination wedding expensive?
Planning a destination wedding is exciting, but one of the first questions most couples ask is, "How much will it cost?" The answer isn't always straightforward. Here's what influences the cost of a destination wedding and how working with an experienced specialist can help you get the most value from your budget.
It’s one of the questions I’m asked most often: “Is a Destination Wedding expensive?”
And my answer is usually: it depends on what you want your wedding experience to look like; every couple is different, with different priorities.
Destination Weddings have changed. They’re no longer simply about flying somewhere tropical, having a ceremony on the beach and coming home. Couples are increasingly creating multi-day celebrations, welcome drinks, group activities, the wedding day itself, recovery brunches and time together with the people who matter most. In fact, current wedding research shows that 71% of wedding celebrations now span two to three days.
That means comparing the price of a destination wedding with a traditional wedding isn’t always comparing like with like.
So, what does a destination wedding actually cost?
There isn't one simple figure I can give you.
The destination, resort, time of year, number of guests, room categories, flights, transfers, wedding package and exchange rates can all affect the final cost. And because destination weddings are often planned 12–24 months ahead, the price you find online today may not accurately reflect what your celebration will ultimately cost.
This is where working with a Destination Wedding Travel Specialist like Desire to Travel can make a significant difference.
I work directly with trusted resorts and suppliers to help my couples understand what they're actually getting for their budget, not simply what looks cheapest online.
Where possible, I can also negotiate or secure group rates, room allocations and added benefits, giving your guests clear booking options while helping protect the overall wedding experience. I may even have some bonuses that no one else has.
It’s not just about finding a resort.
One of the biggest changes I’m seeing is that couples are placing much more importance on the guest experience.
They want their family and friends to feel that travelling for their wedding was worth it. Current trends include resort or villa buyouts, welcome events, local experiences, group activities, farewell brunches and personalised touches throughout the stay.
That also means accommodation isn't necessarily one-size-fits-all.
For a wedding of 50, 100 or even 150 guests, not everyone will want, or be able to afford, the same room category. Some guests may want luxury suites, others may be travelling with children, and some may simply want the most affordable option available.
At Desire to Travel, I look at the bigger picture.
I can recommend different room categories, resorts or travel options where appropriate, while keeping the group logistics as simple as possible. I can also help coordinate the travel side of your celebration, so you aren't spending the months before your wedding answering questions about flights, rooms, transfers and who's booked what, that’s my job.
Why is there a planning fee?
Planning a destination wedding involves considerably more work than producing a standard holiday quote.
There can be hours of research, resort comparisons, supplier communication, group negotiations and travel logistics involved before anyone even steps onto a plane.
You're not simply paying someone to make a booking.
You're paying for experience, specialist knowledge, established relationships, organisation and support, including having someone in your corner when plans change or something unexpected happens.
And when you're responsible not only for your own wedding trip, but potentially the travel arrangements of dozens of your closest friends and family, that support can be invaluable.
So, is a destination wedding expensive?
It certainly can be luxurious, but it doesn't have to be outrageously expensive.
The better question is:
“What kind of destination wedding can we create within our budget?”
That's where I come in.
At Desire to Travel, I help couples turn the idea of getting married somewhere incredible into a celebration that works for their vision, their guests and their budget.
